What this covers
Lost car key replacement is for the driver with no working key left at all. With nothing to copy, the new key is made from the car itself: cut to fit its locks and, where the car uses chipped keys or fobs, programmed so the car recognizes it. The work happens where the car is parked, so there is no need to move a car that cannot be started.
How we approach it
We need the year, make and model, the vehicle identification number, and proof that the car is yours: a photo ID and the registration or title. Once ownership is confirmed, the key is cut, programmed where needed, and tested on the doors and by starting the engine. If you want a second key as well, mention it at the start.
Where it stops
Replacing a lost key covers the key and its programming. If the car will not start for another reason, such as its battery, its starter or a fault in its security electronics, a new key will not change that, and we will tell you what we found. We do not make keys for a car without proof of ownership.

Worth knowing
Search in a sensible order before replacing a key: the places you stopped, the pockets of yesterday's coat, the bottom of bags, the table by the front door. Call the places you visited and ask whether a key was handed in. If the key went missing with something that shows your address, keep the car locked and think about the locks at home as well.
Ask whether the lost key can be removed from the car's memory when the new one is programmed. On many cars, that means the lost key no longer starts the engine, which matters if it went missing somewhere public or together with your address. It is a question for the start of the job, because the answer depends on the car.
Make two keys, not one. A driver who replaces a lost key with a single new key is back in the same position the next time it goes missing. A second key kept at home turns the next loss into a simple copy instead of another key made from scratch.
